What It Is Like to Love Someone With Chronic Pain

I am not the one in pain.

I want to be clear about that.

I know the difference.

But I watch someone I love suffer every day.

And I do not always know how to help.

I ask if they are okay and sometimes the question itself is too much.

I try to do things for them and sometimes that makes them feel worse about themselves.

I give them space and sometimes that feels like abandonment.

There is no right answer.

There is just trying.

And watching.

And feeling helpless in a way that I do not talk about because their pain is so much bigger than my helplessness.

So I hold it quietly.

I learn what helps and what does not.

I try not to take the hard days personally.

I remind myself that the person I love is still in there, underneath all of it.

And I keep showing up.

Because that is what love looks like when someone is sick.

You just keep showing up.

If you love someone with chronic pain, your experience matters too. Caregiver fatigue, helplessness, and grief are real — and they deserve acknowledgment.

BioBreathing is for the person in pain. But if you are the one who loves them, we see you too.
