Good Days Are Complicated When You Have Chronic Pain

On a good day, I do too much.

I cannot help it.

I have been waiting for a good day.

There are dishes in the sink and laundry on the floor and emails I have not answered and people I have not called back.

So when a good day comes, I try to catch up on all of it.

I push.

I do more than I should.

I feel almost normal for a few hours.

And then I pay for it.

For three days.

Sometimes four.

People do not understand this.

They say: but you seemed fine yesterday.

And I want to say: yes. And now I am not. Because I used everything I had.

Good days are not simple when you live with chronic pain.

They come with pressure.

They come with guilt if you rest through them.

They come with consequences if you do not.

There is no winning.

There is only managing.

The boom-bust cycle is one of the most exhausting patterns in chronic pain. It is driven in part by a nervous system that cannot accurately signal when enough is enough — because it has been in overdrive for so long that the signals have become unreliable.

Learning to pace is not about doing less. It is about helping the nervous system find a more stable baseline so that good days become more frequent and the crashes become less severe.
